Traversing Terrains

Welcome to Traversing Terrains. Each daily entry in this series of blog articles presents a collection of 33 read-aloud text for a different terrain type.

While exploring in a sandbox TTRPG adventure, the “in between” can sometimes become tedious and boring. These read-alouds are designed to provide opportunities for game masters to insert descriptive environmental content that can inspire creativity and often even prompt unexpected adventure.

The concept of presenting a collection of read-alouds is something I toyed with back when I wrote Wrath of the Jötunn for AAW Games. As the hardcover adventure book for the Into the Wintry Gale series, an entire chapter near the front of the book was dedicated to providing over 100 ‘over-world’ environmental read-alouds. These were incredibly useful for game masters running the adventure, which required frequent travel between remote locations in the wintry wastes.

I’ve decided to expand on that concept with this series of game design posts. I am releasing a new article in this series daily for the period between July 26, 2026 and August 11, 2026, providing a total of over 520 creative terrain-based read-alouds.
