Things to See While Traversing Rolling Grasslands

Posted on August 1, 2026

This article is one entry in the Traversing Terrains series of articles. Below you will find 33 read-aloud descriptions that can be used while traveling through grasslands terrain.

A thunderous cacophony rumbles across the range as a herd of wild horse gallop along the horizon.  Their gaits wide and leaping over tall blonde grass.

An encampment of ger circle a large bonfire, its blaze licking up towards the night sky. Several horses are racked to wooden posts on the outskirts of the encampment.

The remnants of an ancient stone wall cut directly through fields of tall grain. Consisting of several anchored segments, the stones have been worn to little more than sleek mounds resting upon the earth.

A vibrant vardo wheels its way across a vast grassy expanse. The bright colors painted on the wagon mimicking the prismatic milieu of the setting sun.

In the distance a small farming village is sited from the narrow road. Fields of swaying sorghum are tended by several farmers working to harvest the broomcorn into flattop wagons drawn by mules.

In the middle of an overgrown field of galleta littered with embedded boulders there lies a single sun-bleached wagon wheel, its thick felloe splintered abruptly.

Surrounded by thick needlegrass and grama, a shallow pond gathers in the corner of a picketed field. A trio of coyote whelps frolic and pounce playfully along its muddy shore.

Stretching out across the near barren grasslands, a long carcass, long dried from the harsh sun above, lies next to the skeleton of a great tree. The evidence of a stream long dried up nearby.

Across several beautifully green rolling hills, an expansive vineyard rests peacefully near a sprawling hacienda.

Passing through wispy clouds, a flock of pale geese fly in formation as they traverse the pink sky on their migration to warmer climes. A subtly chilly breeze flutters by, picking up several golden leaves before it releases its hold and vanishes.

Water seems to have taken over this once lush grasslands, a series of flooding events turning what had been intended farming land into nothing more than a massive lake.

Dry dust coils past as drought grasses waver in a wind that weaves through towering termite mounds of densely packed red clay, the sun above baking the thirsty earth into submission.

A flock of dark carrion birds roost in a massive acacia tree in the center of a dead still field of waist-high grass. Above the moon makes the grasses glow faint as their slightly silvered edges catch the light.

A variety of carefully laid out corn fields dot the rolling hills like tiny jewels across an emerald velvet carpet, only interrupted by the rare tall tree and berry bush.

A herd of grazing goats and sheep mill languidly about the hillside, a tall gentleman in a raw cotton robe stands sentinel with a large grey dog at his side.

Painting the picturesque hills in tones of orange, yellow, and purple, the brilliant sunset lights the fields as far as they eye can see. A single road leads off over several hills before vanishing over the last visible rise.

A group of tribal hunters pass silently through the tall grasses before splitting into different directions, their clothing similar to those of woodland elves in design and hues.

A caravan of nomads can be seen traveling down a well-worn path through the fields of lavender and wheat, each robust plant swaying gently in an aromatic breeze.

A small stacked-stone shrine resides in the shade of a lone willow tree, the ancient weeping giant surrounded by an ocean of tall, rippling wind-swept grass.

A small orchard of apple trees has been enclosed within a haphazardly crafted picket fence next to a dilapidated shack. Seeming abandoned, the enclosure hosts a bed of tall weeds and spindlegrass.

On the outskirts of a tiny hamlet small cemetery of half a dozen graves is enclosed within a thickly mortared stone wall breached by a tilted off-hinge wrought iron gate.

A winding brook trails its way between grass-laden hills to be captured in the slow spin of a cobbled wooden waterwheel. From within, muffled behind the burbling waters, murmurs the steady sound of its grindstone milling.

Interrupting the expanse of waving silver grass, massive boulders reflect the brilliant illumination of the full moon above like polished glass; a single moth makes it way from one rock to the next before vanishing into the distance.

A long worn road winds its way through dense grass and rolling hills, dense clusters of wildflowers overtaking the wagon tracks in the reddish clay.

An intensely wavering heat mirage warps and distorts the golden brown grasslands that spread out across a flat landscape – several false lakes offering no relief from the sun.

A sounder of warthogs relaxes beneath a wide acacia tree, the dozen piglets of the pair of sows playing energetically as the females rest in the shade.

What had once been fields of golden wheat and farmlands, now stand decimated by a lingering locus swarm that still consumes the small parts of foliage left.

A single male mammoth slowly traverses the knee-high grasses on its way towards a large lake, his tusks swinging side to side with the movement of his head.

Swathes of deep red berry bushes marble the bright green grasses of the fields framed in tall trees, in the distance a mountain range fades to lilac grey hues.

In a convergence of valleys between gentle hills, a tiny pond is surrounded by all manner of animals waiting their turn at the watering hole. Some keep watch for predators while others drink.

A long burn line eats its way across the dense grass, several farmers following the ash and blackened earth carefully to keep watch over the progress.

Massive deep grey thunderheads build a dense wall of clouds rolling in from the east, the incoming storm pouring enough rain that anything it covers is obscured in its wild downpour.

A dusty crossroads meets at an apex surrounded by an endless expanse of weeds and bramblebush, leaning against a weatherworn wooden sign post is a figure shrouded in a dark cloak beneath an ebon wide-brimmed hat.

Winter’s Roar

Justin Andrew Mason and developer Stephen Rowe are both names that I associate with quality; in this instance, however, they delivered something that exceeded my expectations. My final verdict will clock in at 5 stars + seal of approval and this is furthermore a candidate for my Top Ten of the Year. Get this!
