Things to See While Traversing the Underworld Depths

Posted on August 4, 2026

This article is one entry in the Traversing Terrains series of articles. Below you will find 33 read-aloud descriptions that can be used while traveling through underworld terrain.

Virescent crystals growing from ancient stone shimmer with vibrant glow against umber walls of the massive cavern casting an ethereal luminescence against the abyssal shadow, revealing pearlescent beetles that scuttle across the walls.

Collapsed slabs of granite litter the cavern floor manifesting an asymmetrical, snaggy appearance that contrasts the smooth, damp walls of the chamber. Their slanted and angular edges appearing like the maw of a great beast.

A massive stalagmite spires upwards toward a twin stalactite, their noduled points nearly touching as a steady drip of milky moisture keeps rhythmic accord between the two opposed giants.

A colorful carpet of fungi blankets the tunnel floor, patches of bioluminescence limning the curvature of the corridors shape as it burrows further into the shadows beyond. The natural trail of light seems to expand into a void of darkness.

The subterranean world becomes an amalgam of azure and celadon lines and curves as the textures of the cavern walls are edged in glow from bioluminescent algae growing in a shallow still pool.

Stalactites of solid crystal form a conical spiral that chandeliers from the shadow-shrouded dome of the cavern, stray flashes of light glimmer across the naturally faceted shards twinkling like stars.

A narrow cavern chasm opens into an expansive chamber that continues into utter darkness. A forest of towering mushrooms obscures most of the scene, lamella faintly glowing in chartreuse beneath massive periwinkle caps.

A ring of massive stalagmites towers upwards to the cavern ceiling like gigantic columns suspending the arched dome, a constant rain of dripping water cascades down into a collected lagoon below.

Along one smooth cavern corridor, primitive hand paintings present murals of hunters chasing strange and unknown creatures and several darkened ochre splatters that silhouette handprints.

A crevasse tearing through the cavern ceiling reveals the starry night sky above, pale silver moonlight beams down from the opening and casts a talon shape upon the rough stone floor of the cave.

An eyeless white newt perches upon the tip of a jagged outcropping, its tongue flicking in the air as it searches for prey. A flurry of movement is followed by a crunching sound as the reptile captures and consumes a small scarab.

A varicolored tapestry of calcified minerals blankets the entire wall of the cavern, the rough surface refracting tiny, embedded crystals, its rough surface glistening from recent moisture slowly dripping down its face.

A thick sheet of fog rolls across the obscured cavern floor, stirring wisps of movement suggesting something lurks beneath. Though unseen, the sound of bubbling water rises from beneath the brume.

A constant cool breeze presents a breath of fresh air into the thick, musty air of the cave. Its source is beyond a darkened tunnel that spirals deeper down into the network of tunnels.

Tendrils of carmine lichen stretch across pale granite walls like an unending network of veins, thicker fingers pulsating slowly as if the morass slowly breathes. The stone beneath the capillaries seems to be slightly eroded.

Thick cubic crystals jut out from the cavernous corridor, translucent surfaces magnifying the features of surrounding stone walls. The effect becomes more prominent as the tunnel continues, until an impassable wall of quartz blocks the way.

Layered natural steps of stone descend along the cavern corridor leading deeper into the depths of the earth. A scattering of rubble and loose scree, and the lingering scent of dust, hints to the instability of the passage.

Deep crimson veins of oxidized iron slice through a wide cavern wall, flecks of glimmering gold hinting at the promise of more precious metals that have accumulated near the stony breaks.

A rhythmic woosh draws your attention in the utter silence of the dark stillness, the omnipresent nature of the sound soon causes you to realize it is the sound of your own blood pumping through your veins.

A deep pool of water is illuminated by a bed of eels swimming through its depths, their pale white skin faintly lucent. Their languid movements cause layers of shadow to slowly shift and move beneath the surface.

The heavy scent of mildew and mold weighs heavy upon the humid air trapped in this chamber. The miasma makes it difficult to breathe and you begin to feel nauseous and dizzy as the tainted odor fills your lungs.

The floor of the cavern is imbued with tiny shards of crystal that refract in dazzling array as you move through the chamber. As you progress, the blanket reaches up the walls of the cave extending until every visible surface is inundated with gleam.

A single massive crystal shard rises from the uneven flooring of the cavern. A pulsating, verdant light flashes within to reveal a single rune that has been carved into its surface. A well-worn path suggests the site has been visited for millennia.

Ancient rock formations coalesce to form familiar shapes, your imagination, played by shadow, vividly assigns monikers to each. A dragon. A stallion. A maiden. A broken sword. Each subterranean landmark is etched into your memory.

The tunneling corridor suddenly ends in a wall of thick web. The sticky, white substance undulates in a faint breeze that billows from beyond. A sudden shift of shadow, followed by a skittering sound, warns that its creator resides within.

A lone drop of water echoes to become a symphony of drips, each slightly fainter than the previous. As the repeating sounds fade, they leave an unnerving silence in their wake until in another moment the process repeats.

Beneath a collapsed ledge, heavy boulders partially cover a crushed humanoid skeleton. The bare bones contrasting the dark stone that shattered them eons past. Closer examination reveals the bones to be calcified to solid white stone.

A shallow, wavering breeze casts what sounds like whispers upon the dark silence of the cavern. You are almost sure you hear words spoken, but the more you focus, the more obscure they seem to become until entirely lost upon the stillness.

Beyond the dim illumination of the cave entrance, shadows swallow every visage of stone. A lone stream of light pierces from outside the mouth, slicing into the stygian abyss to reveal a swirling ocean of dust particulates.

The sounds of water cascading down the cavern wall are revealed to be a waterfall seeping from between wide cracks in the cave ceiling. The flow of water is constant as it traces down the uneven stone and around embedded opaque crystals.

A distant fluttering increases in volume until it is joined by a chorus of squeaks and clicks. The corridor becomes aflutter with a horde of bats as they migrate to the mouth of the cave for the night’s hunt, moments later leaving only silence.

Phosphorescent crystals are enveloped in total darkness and create a celestial cosmos that glimmers as brilliantly as the night sky in hues more brilliant than any rainbow, their natural luminescence radiating in colors not yet imagined.

A deep rumbling underfoot causes a shower of swirling dust to descend from the cavern ceiling above, and somewhere deeper in the cave you hear a heavy crashing sound. The tremor stops, and suddenly a thick burst of dust rushes from the depths.

Ways of the Old

Justin Andrew Mason’s fourth mini-dungeon for the Into the Wintery Gale series does it right: We have a great, flavorful build-up; evocative read-aloud text…and non-combat means to resolve the danger. Traps and even a bit of investigation set-up (optional) are provided – this is great and makes the formula work in spite of its brevity. My final verdict 5 stars.
