Things to See While Traversing a Desolate Desert

Posted on July 28, 2026

This article is one entry in the Traversing Terrains series of articles. Below you will find 33 read-aloud descriptions that can be used while traveling through desert terrain.

Endless dunes of white sand stretch across a curvilinear horizon as harsh searing winds manifest abrasive zephyr.

Blinding sun glares down upon a torrid and cracked earthen surface sparsely littered with the remnants of dried brush.

A high cliff towers over a barren landscape of sand and stone. The scree at its base cloaked in the only shade visible for miles.

Huge, sunbaked boulders shoulder the windswept slant of massive sand dunes, a bone-dry wind send grains skittering across stone.

An expanse of sun-bleached earth forms a desolate plain. Dried and parched cacti spire from the blistered terrain.

A large fissure torn into the dead earth forms a shallow valley littered with large chunks of dried earth as hard as boulders.

Oblong boulders skirt the lifeless edges of massive rolling sand dunes, their forms carved and shaped by eons of wind erosion.

A trio of stout xerophytes, crowned in long prickly spines, cling to life amid the wastes. One boasts a small purple pod-like flower.

Along the side of a jutting mesa cliff everything seems to be coated in a fine dusting of spectral white sandstone powder.

Columnar rock towers trace what was once a singular formation, now timeworn, the sand-swept winds have revealed colorful strata.

A ghostly white quadrupedal skeleton reclines along a layered shale outcropping, its hollow eye sockets gazing into the thirsty dunes.

Lone shale boulders rest scattered erratically across a sea of shallow sand, stationed between flowing wind-carved searing waves.

The lone husk of an ancient tree, gnarled and hollow, suggests a now desolate locale of a once thriving oasis.

Smoothly rolling hills of golden sand slowly shift into a barren waste of stony cracked earth, bleached from a heavy sun.

A stretch of rocky ground interrupted by massive fingers of twisting dead trees, a series of sediment rings revealing a dried up lake.

Sun-beaten formations of white stone almost give the impression of floating with a heavy heat mirage stretching to the horizon.

Thread thin wisps of clouds do nothing to abate the scorching heat of the sun above reflecting off the glass-like sand.

Across a barren expanse of oddly ridged earth and sand, a wall of roiling clouds of a deep sienna hue seem to be moving across the landscape.

A lone avian shadow circles above, momentarily disappearing against the blazing solar light before it becomes visible once more.

Layers of drab sandstone lead into a deep ravine carved from the earth, the phantom of trickling water emanating from within.

A natural garden of sepia-hued vegetation clings to the otherwise barren terrain, their dried sinewy roots visible between deep cracks.

In the distance a series of crags climb above sandy planes, their shape vaguely reminiscent of some great stone dragon taking flight.

Cast by arid desert winds, rubble clatters down from the brows of several skyclad hoodoos, the rocky debris shattering upon impact.

A long-scorched riverbed winds through the banal landscape creating an off-tone path of reddish shale that continues beyond the horizon.

Awakened by a dusty sirocco, several parched brambles of thistle break from their shallow roots and roll across the fissured earth.

Clumps of bristle straw dance between the faces of a cleft slicing a sandstone boulder, the flurry of motion revealing a tiny ivory-scaled lizard.

Beneath a cloudless sky, the sun cloaks a desiccated arid landscape in a wavering mirage that causes the horizon to undulate with riotous discord.

Sand gives way to the darkened brim of a shallow pool. The remains of desert fauna are scattered around the muddy water in various states of decay.

A linear butte of striated earthy umber stands bastion over the desert wastes, a mound of loose rubble circumventing its base.

A bright white moon illuminates silver sand like shifting mercury in a gentle breeze, the footprints of a nocturnal desert dweller slowly fading.

Darkness rules the dunes like a heavy cloak awash in nebulous sky formations, starlight the only lumina for the parched terrain.

The soft sounds of skittering drifts over the red dunes as the sun dies behind a massive stony formation, the light setting the stone aflame.

Rare dew clings to bits of stone and sand as morning begins to glow in the sky, pale streaks of gold chasing away the shadows of night.

Wrath of the Jötunn

This module at once manages to evoke themes of old-school masterpieces, the sense of myth, the sense of plausibility and the new-school focus on a captivating narrative, with tons of read-aloud text, diverse challenges… My final verdict will clock in at 5 stars + seal of approval and this is furthermore a candidate for my Top Ten of the Year.
