Things to See While Traversing a Forgotten Forest

Posted on July 30, 2026

This article is one entry in the Traversing Terrains series of articles. Below you will find 33 read-aloud descriptions that can be used while traveling through forest terrain.

A large gnarled tree has, at some point in its life, been hit by lightning yet it survives; the scar down its bark giving it an odd appearance.

Ghostly blue wisps of light dance through the branches of multiple trees as clouds dim the celestial illumination from above.

The many tracks of a deer herd can be seen trailing off across the densely packed brown soil, bitten and chewed leaves rustling in a soft breeze.

Resting beneath a moss-draped live oak with its branches reaching out like tired spindly arms, a massive hart sits with his legs tucked and head bowed slightly in repose.

In the center of a clearing, a dead trunk spires up from burnt grass and ground like a skeletal hand reaching for the sky. Oddly, multiple names have been carved into its bleached grey surface.

A small moss-thatched cottage is situated within a small copse of equally mossy trees, the dense green offering some camouflage from the world around it.

Laying across the barely there pathway through the trees is a massive decaying log, its length is covered in various ferns and moss.

In the distance, amongst the tall coniferous trees, dances tiny green lights close to the ground like wisps of flame.

Leaving behind a trail of clear slime, a small multi-colored slug trudges along a large boulder half concealed on the side of the trail.

Clouds of insects dance in the beams of light that pierce through the canopy of the forest, layers of leaves leaving behind dappled light now occupied by fluttering wings.

The forest is filled with the sound of various birds seemingly having a conversation overhead, the leaves of several trees drifting by in a soft breeze.

Cutting through the dense carpet of moss and roots, a brook filled with smooth stones winds its way from one line of sight to another; the soft sound chiming pleasantly.

Moss carpets every flat surface in a dense blanket of lush green, giving everything a velvety appearance.

A small clearing makes way for a deep wellspring that seems to have once been a structured place, but now stones have fallen to reveal the natural source.

Overtaken by vines and massive trees, the barely visible walls and foundation of a temple is just barely discernible in the foliage.

A winding trail of strange smooth rocks vanishes off the side of the trail and disappears into the trees, tiny multihued fungi sprout at different points from between the stones.

The forest is alight with multiple shades of autumnal hues; ranging from burnished golds and fiery oranges to deep carmine reds and chocolate browns to welcome a change in season.

Not too far beyond the tree line lays a large stone circle made from painted red rock, the decoration flaking in places where it still clings desperately to the surface.

A half-finished carving has been etched into the face of a massive rocky outcropping interrupting the dense forest around it, the primitive design simple but only half done.

As sunlight filters through the trees spread wide across a carpet of green and brown, a fluffy brown squirrel scampers past before bolting up a nearby tree in a panic.

Thickly packed underbrush make it difficult to discern the shear drop down into a roaring river slicing an expansive deciduous forest in half, a thin rope bridge has been strung from one side to another.

Colossal redwoods spear upward into the sky from rich soil spanning the landscape, clusters of silvery blue moss cling to exposed roots where organic matter peeks from beneath the dirt.

Snow muffles all sound that once filled the air, rolling blankets of soft white creating a monochromatic scenery.

A large valley of trees sits in the shadows of a distance mountain range, a large colony of nests weighting down the branches as swarms of small silvery-blue birds murmuring through the air.

Odd shadows undulate across the forest floor, each individual thread of darkness avoiding the dappling of light from the dying sun on the horizon.

A small spring sits quietly with its shores completely packed with water lilies and their foliage, a woven canopy of trees shading the entire site.

Drifting across a breeze that tickles the leaves of trees and bushes alike, a strange whispering seems to come from all directions before it vanishes with the dying wind.

Half concealed beneath a fallen tree, the carcass of what had once been an animal is now nothing more than deflated fur, bones, and a medley of beautiful fungi.

The signs of an old, abandoned den can be seen in the hollow of a massive oak stump. Remnants of a past life captured in perpetual repose where the heartwood of the ancient tree once thrived.

Luminous leaves reveal the illumination from the moon above, the dappled moonlight across the forest floor giving it a starlight appearance.

A small elven village boasts a subtle activity within its timber fencing, the green moss and fungi growing on the old trees used to protect the settlement giving it a modicum of camouflage.

Nestled between sibling ancient oaks, a bramble of twining canes of blackberry nearly obscure a glistening verdant feminine figure. When noticed the dryad frantically leaps for one of the oaks, disappearing behind its gnarled bark.

Deep within the ancient forest, a dark secluded grove of elms glows alight from a stone-stacked campfire surrounded by makeshift halved-log chairs. The campsite occupants are nowhere to be seen.

Assassin’s Breach

This has the potential to be pure, unadulterated awesomeness and elicit multiple WTF-reactions from your players. My final verdict will hence clock in at 5 stars and I’ll add my seal of approval as well… now to plot how to integrate the inn in my next campaign.
