I have moved for bluer skies! After using my Facebook professional profile as my primary online social media hub since 2010 (when I migrated there from MySpace), I have decided to migrate once again.
I hope you’ll join me on Bluesky. Follow me @justinandrewmason.bsky.social.
Why I’m leaving Facebook
Due to Meta’s rollout of the ‘Meta One‘ program, I am expected to pay a subscription fee for my professional profile to be able to post more than two external hyperlinks per month. Not only do I find this restriction to post content obscene and disgusting, but the cost for unlimited hyperlink posts is a whopping $499 USD/month.
My only heartfelt honest response: Fuck Zuckerberg. Fuck Meta. Fuck Facebook.
My Facebook and Instagram profiles will remain active to be utilized for POSSE-style posts linking to important announcements about projects. Apparently, up to two per month. I will not be browsing the Facebook timeline or engaging in regular conversation on Facebook any longer.
If you would like to engage and interact with me on social media, I look forward to hearing from you on Bluesky.
The reasons I chose Bluesky as my new social media hub
The service is a popular decentralized social media platform built upon the open source Authenticated Transfer (AT) Protocol.
Data Ownership! Unlike traditional networks run by single corporations, like Meta, Bluesky user interfaces are separated from the underlying data network. Bluesky functions as a federated model where anyone can host their own instance while still communicating seamlessly with users on other servers across the platform ecosystem. This means that if I decide to switch providers or move to a different server, I can take my username, followers, and data with me seamlessly. No one would even be aware I made a switch.
No corporate algorithms! Instead, Bluesky offers custom feeds and a choice of community-curated algorithms, allowing me to control exactly what appears on my personal timeline.
