Dungeon Challenge—Room #007

The Darkness Within

Cartography

Cartography: (Preview map rotated 90-degrees counterclockwise.) The room is 40 feet from east to west and 80 feet north to south. The northern and southern quarters of the room are rounded into semi-circles, with the north curve encompassing the northernmost 10 feet and the south curve encompassing the southernmost 20 feet. There is a door on the western wall, 40 feet from the northern wall, and two doors centered on the eastern wall, spaced 20 feet apart.

Room Details

Room Details: The ceiling in this room is 40 feet high, except for three 15-foot wide, 15-foot deep domes spaced 5 feet apart that trace the north-to-south axis of the chamber. The air quality is adequate. The volume of the room is approximately 101,301 cubic feet. The elevation of the room is -115 feet.  This room is included in Dungeon Zone 1.

Landmarks

Landmarks: This room has no landmarks and is shrouded in unnatural magical darkness.

Read Aloud

The world seems to fall away and plunge into darkness beyond the entry. The area through the rounded portal is engulfed in an unnatural darkness. It is a swirling mass of shadows that devours all light, leaving everything within obscured. The air is bitterly cold, a biting chill that steals warmth and leaves you with an unsettling sense of isolation. Faint, indiscernible anguished whispers seep from the shadows, distant yet unmistakably close. They beckon. The darkness feels alive, as though it is waiting for something to break the silence to reveal what lies hidden within its mysterious depths.

More Information

The chamber is shrouded in unnatural darkness that absorbs all light, natural and magical alike. Momentary tendrils of shade swirl through the room, creating a constantly shifting, impenetrable void. Darkvision cannot penetrate this darkness.

Combat Encounter

Within the darkness lurks a soulbound unicorn. Its eyes have been gouged out, and its twisted horn bears deep slashed grooves; its fur and mane are tenebrous and appear to be soaked in blood. A frigid cold radiates from the creature, revealing its general location in the dark, and when the creature is damaged the magical darkness abates enough to see its shadowy likeness for an instant.

In life, the unicorn was hunted and slaughtered by poachers in a fey-blessed grove. Now feral and bound to its final fearful moments, it continuously attacks any living creature that enters its darkness, though it remains confined to the room.

When the unicorn is destroyed, the unnatural darkness slowly dissipates over the proceeding hour.

Summoner’s Remorse

Justin Andrew Mason pushes the boundaries of the series in this module, providing a rather atmospheric, awesome mini-dungeon for your perusal – from cool adversaries to nasty atmosphere, solid challenges and a sense of urgency, this one delivers more than a file of its length conceivably has a right to – excellent job, well worth 5 stars + seal of approval.
