Dungeon Challenge—Room #012

Posted on August 26, 2025

Memories Lost

Cartography

Cartography: The room is 30 feet from east to west and 40 feet north to south. There is a door centered on the northern wall, and another door located 10 feet from the south wall, centered within a recessed 10-foot wide, 5-foot deep alcove on the eastern wall.

Room Details

Room Details: The ceiling in this room is 15 feet high. The air quality is nominal. The volume of the room is approximately 6,750 cubic feet. The elevation of the room is -100 feet. This room is included in Dungeon Zone 1.

Landmarks

Landmarks: Four 15-foot tall columns, one in each corner of the chamber.

Read Aloud

A strange fog clings to the air, swirling in ghostly wisps that drift without direction. The mist is thick, but within it, faint humanoid shapes can be seen, their forms barely perceptible, as if woven from the swaying brume itself. They move aimlessly, their movements slow and unsteady, like lost souls searching for something they can no longer remember. A constant whisper fills the room, a susurrus that seems to rise from the very walls themselves. It is as though the chamber is alive with quiet voices.

More Information

From outside the door, creatures entering this room appear to dematerialize into mist. Inside, the room becomes thick fog, heavy with the scent of the ocean, and the adventurers stand upon the top deck of a heavily damaged galleon adrift at sea. Ghostly forms solidify into eight incorporeal, maimed sailors wandering the deck, mumbling half-spoken sentences, scarcely aware of intruders.

This is not an illusion; the entire chamber is a manifestation of a soulbound pirate captain dwelling unseen within the fog. The sailors are confused, flustered, and desperately trying to recall their identities. Any interaction provokes rage, confusion, and sorrow, but they will only attack if assaulted or commanded by the captain.

Combat Encounter

If any creature attempts to leave the deck, the soulbound pirate captain manifests, boisterously accusing all present of mutiny and condemning them to death. He commands his eight soulbound sailors to join his attack.

When the captain is destroyed, the seaward scene and any remaining sailors dissolve into mist, leaving the chamber unoccupied.
