Dungeon Challenge—Room #003

Posted on August 13, 2025

An Endless Thirst for Life

Cartography

Cartography: The room is 50 feet from east to west and 40 feet north to south. There is a door centered on both the north and south walls, and on the western wall, there is a 20-foot wide, 10-foot deep semi-circular alcove.

Room Details

Room Details: The ceiling of this room is arch-shaped from east to west, rising from a base ceiling of 10 feet to an apex of 20 feet. The air quality is nominal. The volume of the room is approximately 6,666 cubic feet. The elevation of the room is -100 feet. This room is included in Dungeon Zone 1.

Landmarks

Landmarks: A locked door upon the south wall, four 20-foot tall columns, each positioned in a corner of the room, a tableau statue set within the niche of the room that depicts a heavy-set satyr with a massive empty basin set upon its bulbous belly, entwined around the central figure are five scantily-clad courtesans depicted with adoring gazes cast towards the satyr.

Read Aloud

The ceiling above rises in graceful arches, its curve lending a sense of openness to the room as the walls stand firm, cloaked in the shadow of the ancient stonework. Four tall columns stand in each corner of the room, the pair upon the western wall framing an alcove that cradles a large tableau statue—a rotund satyr, its figure bulbous and round, an empty basin resting upon its bulging belly. Around it, five courtesans are frozen in time, each one depicted in a moment of adoration, their eyes locked fervently towards the horned figure.

More Information

If the soulbound performers from Room #2 were encountered, closer inspection of the tableau reveals the five courtesans strongly resemble those spirits—one elven, two human, and two half-elven.

Puzzle

The locked door on the south wall is difficult to bypass but will unlock automatically when at least 50 gallons of liquid are poured into the basin carved upon the satyr statue’s belly. The basin has a hole at the bottom that drains liquid via a pipe into a larger basin located in Room #4.

Combat Encounter

When the door is unlocked, it immediately slides open, sinking back into a recess in the wall. From beyond a male soulbound satyr, identical to the statue, lunges forth from the darkness to attack. Armed with a shortsword and equipped with a panpipe, he attempts to play the pipe if damaged. When played, the panpipe summons the soulbound performers from Room #2 to his aid if they have not already been destroyed.

In life the satyr used his magical panpipe to charm the performers into dancing for him until they collapsed and succumbed to exhaustion, in the process of the unbridled revelry, the glutinous fey also drank himself to death, binding the lot of souls in their shared fate.

Random Review

The Vikmordere

This is a really good, system-neutral first look at the Vikmordere, one that does not SPOIL any of the modules featuring them, while giving players a good first grasp of these peoples. My final verdict will clock in at 5 stars + seal of approval.
