Game Development Post #001 — Creating Dungeon Zone 1

Posted on August 11, 2025
The blank map for Dungeon Zone 1.

The first step in getting started on this Dungeon Challenge is to create a blank dungeon map. Rather than trying to design the entire dungeon layout up-front, I have opted to create the maps in sections, each representing a “zone” of the dungeon. These zones will also be used to help me manage game balance that reflects on player progression. Aspects of the dungeon such as the difficulty of encounters and traps, the power level of any magic items discovered, etc. will adhere to the zone in which a room is located.

To start out, from the dungeon entrance (Room #001), we will create Zone 1. This zone will be intended for low-level adventurers, likely being geared for levels 1-4.

These old-school “blue maps” will be populated as the daily room posts are made. When the rooms are all completed at the end of the challenge, I will create a full-color artistic map for the dungeon.

Raider’s Haul

I love this book and while it may not be 100% perfect, it is very close to that… at least for me. My final verdict will hence clock in at 5 stars + seal of approval.
