Dungeon Challenge—Room #008

Posted on August 20, 2025

A Light Shines Through

Cartography

Cartography: The room is a 10-foot wide corridor that is occupied for 10 feet by a steep 45-degree angle stairwell that descends for 15 feet, then continues east for another 20 feet before turning south for an additional 10 feet and opening into a larger chamber. The chamber is 30 feet from east to west and 20 feet north to south.

Room Details

Room Details: The ceiling in this room is 10 feet high. The air quality is compromised. The volume of the room is approximately 1,000 cubic feet. The elevation of the room is -130 feet.  This room is included in Dungeon Zone 1.

Landmarks

Landmarks: A statue of a cloaked woman raising a golden-flamed torch, two 20-foot tall columns situated to each side of the statue.

Read Aloud

Brilliant light radiating from a nearby statue nearly blinds your eyes as they acclimate from the darkness. The stone figure, a woman shrouded in deep, hooded robes, stands frozen in time holding a flaming torch high above her frame as she casts her gaze in opposition to the light. The unnatural white flame of the torch glows brightly, pushing back shadows with an intensity that fills the room, casting sharp, defined edges across the stone. Flanking the statue, two towering columns stand as silent sentinels, their shadows writhe and dance, cast in frantic shuddering upon the nearby walls.

More Information

The statue holds a magical Ghostlight Torch. It functions as a normal torch, but its heatless flame can be intensified to illuminate twice the normal area or dimmed to light only the immediate vicinity. The torch’s light penetrates all magical darkness. If any undead creatures are within 100 feet of the torch, its white flame flickers and sputters wildly as if caught in a strong wind, otherwise the flame appears calm with a gentle undulation.

When the torch is removed from the statue’s hand, the soulbound unicorn from Room #7 manifests (if it had been previously destroyed) and the room is once again flooded with unnatural darkness. When the unicorn is destroyed while illuminated by the Ghostlight Torch, its incorporeal horn solidifies as its body evaporates. The horn falls to the ground and becomes a wand of darkness, holding one charge that recharges on the third dawn after its last use. Once the horn materializes the unicorn has been truly destroyed.

Maw of the Dark Tide

Justin Andrew Mason’s “Maw of the Dark Tide” requires a bit of templating work, but oh boy is it worth it! The floating fortress is unique, the artifacts are cool and the super-boss is BRUTAL when built according to specifications… 5 stars + seal of approval.
